WHO NEEDS PrEP?
PrEP is for EVERYONE regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or relationship status. According to the CDC, 25% of new HIV infections are transmitted through heterosexual sex. Men who have sex with men account for 69% of new infections. Intravenous drug users are also at a significant risk of contracting HIV.
WHY SHOULD I BE ON PrEP?
When you are on PrEP, YOU are in control of your HIV status when used regularly and in combination with other safe sex practices. You cannot control the habits of your sexual partners but you can control your own. PrEP offers nearly perfect protection against HIV and is even more effective than condoms!
WILL PrEP HELP MY SEX LIFE?
When you are on PrEP you do not have to worry about being distracted during sex by being worried about the other persons HIV status but it is important to remember that PrEP does not protect you against other STIs. PrEP may even give you the confidence to explore where you had previously been concerned thanks to the protection PrEP offers.
WILL PrEP PROTECT ME FROM OTHER STIs?
PrEP ONLY PROTECTS YOU FROM HIV. However, you will be tested for STIs every 3 months while in our care. By doing so, you are updated on your STI status every 90 days so that you can protect yourself and your partners and if needed be treated by your provider for any STI that may occur.
DOES PrEP HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Most people do not experience ANY side effects as a result of the medication. However, as with any medicine that you introduce to your body, a small percentage of people might experience minor digestive issues or mild headaches initially and for a short amount of time. Truvada can lead to slight changes in bone density or kidney function but rarely do these changes cause serious medical issues. Descovy is less likely to cause medical issues. Both medications have been proven very safe and effective. Your provider will closely monitor your overall health to ensure that no issues occur.
CAN I EVEN AFFORD PrEP?
YES! Cost should never be a factor when it comes to PrEP. Most of our patients receive PrEP for $0 out of pocket cost. Our staff works closely with you to eliminate ANY AND ALL barriers to you receiving PrEP. We are always here to answer any questions you may have, assist you in working with your pharmacy or insurance provider and work through any barrier to your improved HIV protection...Plus, you are receiving overall care in the meantime from a friendly staff in a non-judgemental, safe and stigma free environment.
